Permission Click Adds Capital and Readies for International Expansion

(Winnipeg, Manitoba) March 21, 2018 — Permission Click, the global leader in K–12 school form automation, has closed a multimillion-dollar capital raise led by an international strategic investor. The new investment will allow Permission Click to significantly expand its school- facing organization across North America, while turning an eye to new markets overseas. The company is working to make more than a dozen new hires in sales, marketing, and product development.

Permission Click is best known for its School Edition, which delivers digital permission slips, forms, and payment collection for K–12 schools. It recently launched a premium, full-featured District Edition, which has quickly gained traction across the U.S. and Canada. Permission Click is already used by thousands of schools in more than 30 countries and 108 languages.

"School systems are facing widespread budget reductions, and we are seeing a big spike in district leaders focused on ways to do more with less," said Chris Johnson, co-founder and CEO of Permission Click. "With Permission Click, schools can not only find massive efficiencies by going digital, but for the first time they have a tool to implement more comprehensive risk- management practices that are critical to managing child safety and containing costs in today's increasingly litigious environment.'

Permission Click is built from the ground up to help K-12 systems manage risk and reduce liability by demonstrating that forms and processes have been consistently applied, that any required approvals (either internal or from parents) have been collected, and that documents have been securely archived.

"While we aren't disclosing the identity of our new partners just yet," said Johnson, "I can say we are thrilled. They share our vision to free schools from manual, paper-based processes and have invested in our company as a first step in our partnership. We are now working ahead to combine our award-winning platform with their deep education market expertise in their region to rapidly scale Permission Click in a whole new market."

Illuminate Education acquires eduCLIMBER

Illuminate Education, the company transforming K-12 instruction through educational intelligence solutions, has joined forces with eduCLIMBER, a unique cloud-based data system that increases efficiency and accuracy of data analysis to improve student outcomes. eduCLIMBER is based in Evansville, Wis. and currently serves hundreds of school districts.

The dynamic combination will add eduCLIMBER's data capabilities, which focus on the visualization of both academic and behavioral data, to Illuminate Education's established Education Intelligence Platform. The companies' aligned missions and complementary technologies will allow them to provide increasingly more useful and user-friendly data to K-12 districts through a strengthened set of product offerings.

"Illuminate Education and eduCLIMBER's shared focus on utilizing data to improve student outcomes makes this combination powerful," said Max Carnecchia, CEO of Illuminate Education. "eduCLIMBER's abilities are unparalleled in providing teachers and administrators with digestible and visual student data. These tools produce automated data walls, saving teachers' valuable planning time. Specialists can easily monitor student progress and administrators can quickly triangulate and compare student data across a school or district."

The Illuminate team of educators has been committed to creating tools that promote student and educator success since 2009. Since Illuminate Education's founding, K-12 districts have increasingly looked to organize key data functions such as student information systems, data warehouses, assessment management and individual education plans in special education. To address these needs, Illuminate Education developed its Education Intelligence Platform to consolidate these functionalities into one simple, effective system.

Founded in 2013, eduCLIMBER has been on a similar path to improve education through data visualization, particularly to enhance Response to Intervention (RTI) and Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

"This is a true partnership of two companies who are passionate about helping educators with their data," said Matt Harris, co-founder of eduCLIMBER. "Together, we will give educators what they've been dreaming of — a single system to aggregate and visualize their student data, which then enables them to identify strategies for improving student outcomes."

Third Annual K-12 Systems Survey Now Available!

We just finished updating the survey itself (added additional categories and systems), and it's ready to go for the 17/18 school year.

Please help us create the most up-to-date and comprehensive open-source listing of enterprise systems in use by California K-12 school districts.

Last year we had over 400 responses.  This year our goal is 500!

Small districts and charter schools are welcome to update their systems too!

It just takes a few minutes to complete and you'll get an email with the results when they are completed!

Having an understanding of which districts are using which systems helps us prioritize our open-source support initiatives.

Sincerely,

Roberta Trujillo, Volunteer.

Harris School Solutions Acquires Quintessential School Systems

Bethel Park, PA: Harris School Solutions (HSS), the premier provider of technology solutions for K-12 districts, charter schools, and continuing education programs across North America, announced the recent acquisition of Quintessential School Systems (QSS), a provider of administrative software and consulting services for those same educational markets.

By purchasing the San Carlos, California-based company, HSS looks not only to expand its line of high-quality software, hardware, and services, but also to increase its presence in California, thereby benefiting – while also expanding – its Financial Solutions business unit’s clientele in the region.

Said Scott Schollenberger, EVP of HSS’ Financial Solutions unit, “We’re excited to bring QSS, its employees, its products, and its services into the Harris School Solutions family. Obviously, this is great news for us as a company in that we’re building a larger presence in California, but more importantly this really is going to make a positive difference for our clients. They’ll have access to even more great resources for their schools and programs.”

The QSS resources to which Schollenberger alluded include, most notably, QSS/OASIS, a complete administrative solution featuring a system of fully integrated modules ranging from General Ledger, Payroll and Fixed Assets to Inventory, Base Personnel, Position Control and more.

Schollenberger pointed to both the current success and the future potential of QSS/OASIS in particular as a major factor behind the decision to make the purchase, saying, “QSS/OASIS is capable of going beyond single school districts; it actually can and already does support multi-district agencies, such as county offices of Education, and also community colleges. We see this product as a way to bolster what we offer now while opening even more doors for HSS in the future.”

Similarly, QSS expressed its excitement over joining with HSS. According to Duane Percox, COO of the company prior to its acquisition, “Harris School Solutions is an outstanding organization, not just because of its products and services, but also because of the people who offer them. The people within the company are the real deal, so I’m thrilled to be working with them. Together, we’re going to offer our same great products and services, but to many, many more schools across North America.”

Edsby platform moves to Microsoft Azure Cloud

ONTARIO, Canada  – Edsby®, a SaaS platform that gives K-12 school districts, regions and national governments better student, teacher and parent engagement, improved educational outcomes and new insight into educational effectiveness, is now running on Microsoft Azure, Microsoft’s hyperscale, enterprise-grade cloud platform, as part of a global relationship between the two companies.

K-12 education organizations usually have strict data sovereignty requirements that require them to store their academic data in the country/region they operate. Edsby is now leveraging Microsoft’s investment in Azure data centers worldwide to meet these requirements for customers around the globe. This is especially attractive for large school districts along with state, provincial and national educational organizations.

In addition, the move to Azure provides Edsby with unprecedented scalability and performance that can be flexibly and cost effectively tuned to meet demand as use of Edsby grows in regions around the world. From a management perspective, Azure makes it possible to manage all Edsby global deployments from a single console.

“We’ve benefited from a number of key Azure technologies in moving from our bare metal architecture to Azure, including Azure SQL Database for high availability data management, Azure Storage for durable tiered storage, Azure Portal and more,” said Steven Asbury, Edsby Co-Founder and Vice President of Engineering. “The software porting and customer data migration took just a few months, and we are now recognizing many benefits, such as improved performance, scalability-on-demand, more flexible storage, back-end monitoring/analytics, a better high availability and disaster recovery offering and other efficiencies.”

Edsby’s migration to Azure builds on earlier integration work by Edsby with Microsoft technologies, including support for Microsoft Azure Active Directory, which enables convenient one-click authentication, Microsoft OneDrive access for Edsby users using Office 365 and upcoming support for integrations between Edsby and OneNote Class Notebook. In addition, work is underway to embed Azure Power BI into the Edsby analytics offering.

“Edsby is enhancing how students, teachers and parents communicate and collaborate while leveraging the power of the Microsoft Cloud,” said Anthony Salcito, Vice President of Worldwide Education, Microsoft. “We look forward to working with Edsby to bring this solution to schools around the world.”

CA school districts adopt visitor security systems

Scan ID cards, create instant visitor badges

Three school districts in Orange County, California have invested in a new visitor management system that scans visitor IDs before approving access into buildings. The Santa Ana Unified School District, the Anaheim Elementary School District and the Irvine Unified School District have all installed the technology at some or all of their schools, reports Campus Safety magazine.

Under the system, a person enters the school building and gives their driver's license or other government ID to the desk attendant. The attendant puts the ID into a hand-sized scanner that runs the ID through all 50 states' databases for registered sex offenders. After an ID has been approved, a printer automatically creates a name badge that includes the time the guest checked in and the guest's campus destination.
