SACRAMENTO—State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond has announced the release of the California Department of Education’s (CDE) first-ever mobile app for the California Content Standards, a powerful tool that provides quick, targeted access to standards related to the arts, computer science, health education, history–social science, and mathematics.

Content standards are utilized by educators to design the knowledge, concepts, and skills that students should acquire for subject areas at each grade level. The California Standards app, designed entirely by CDE staff, can search, filter, and sort content standards to isolate specific content, identify standards that are common across disciplines, and inform decisions around instruction and assessment.

“This app is an incredible tool for our educators and parents, empowering them with access, knowledge, and understanding of these content standards, which are an essential element to the academic success of each and every one of our students in California,” said Thurmond.

The launch of the California Standards app is phase 1 of a multiphase plan put in place by CDE. This phase includes 5 of 12 California content standards. In subsequent phases, additional content standards will be included, as well as additional features that will enhance the usefulness of the application to California educators.

The California Standards mobile app can be found on the iOS App store, the Android Play store, and the Microsoft store by searching the term “CA Standards.” More information about the app and links to the app stores are on the CDE California Standards Mobile Application website.

Instructure acquires MasteryConnect

SALT LAKE CITY — April 17, 2019 — Instructure, Inc. (NYSE: INST) today announced it has signed an agreement to acquire MasteryConnect, a longtime partner and innovator in the design and delivery of formative and interim assessment that supports personalized and mastery-based learning. Through this acquisition, Instructure will accelerate the shift occurring at the state level as they replace high-stakes, end-of-year testing with innovative assessment models. This new approach uses formative data to provide actionable insights for teachers and students.

"Today's educators are trying to move away from archaic, end-of-year testing and looking for more intuitive evaluation models," said Dan Goldsmith, CEO of Instructure. "Together, Canvas and MasteryConnect will place valuable data in the hands of our teachers, not once, but throughout the year so they can focus on activities that increase student learning."

MasteryConnect is designed to quickly identify student levels of understanding, target areas for personalized growth, and give teachers the data they need to direct each student's learning. MasteryConnect has worked with Dr. Jonathan Templin, Professor and E .F. Lindquist Chair in the Educational Measurement and Statistics program at the University of Iowa, to create statistical models that provide reliable student data around mastery of standards through shorter formative evaluations. These models pin-point what students know, letting schools redefine assessment, integrating it more closely with curriculum and instruction.

Teachers in more than 14,000 U.S. school districts use MasteryConnect including Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (NC), Oklahoma City Public Schools (OK), and Alpine School District (UT), with many districts nationwide already using both MasteryConnect and Canvas together.

"At Hall County Schools, we consider Canvas and MasteryConnect valuable tools for teaching and learning since they provide teachers the information they need to create a dynamic and engaging blended learning environment," said Gregory Odell, e-Learning Specialist at Hall County Schools in Georgia. "Our students benefit from both products, and we will benefit overall from these companies coming together to help K-12 students learn and grow."

MasteryConnect was founded in 2009 and is headquartered in Salt Lake City. Its solution will continue to be sold as a standalone offering. In addition, for customers interested in combining assessment with learning, MasteryConnect will be further integrated with Canvas LMS, helping districts scale personalized learning, increase student achievement, and support professional learning. MasteryConnect and Instructure have been partners in education since 2016.

"This acquisition brings together many years of partnership and synergies with Instructure," said Mick Hewitt, Co-founder and CEO of MasteryConnect, who will join Instructure as General Manager of MasteryConnect. "It highlights the alignment of our shared mission to transform learning while expanding our reach both domestically and globally."

The acquisition is expected to close within the next seven days and is subject to satisfaction of customary closing conditions, including approval by MasteryConnect stockholders.

SchoolCity Assessment achieves IMS Certification

By becoming IMS Global certified, Illuminate continues to demonstrate a sincere commitment to interoperability standards," said Jason Naile, director of instructional technology and media at Forsyth County Schools in Georgia.

To fulfill its promise to provide collaborative solutions to educators, Illuminate Education, the leading K-12 Education Intelligence Platform (EIP), announces that its suite of SchoolCity personalized learning solutions is IMS Global Standards certified. Through this certification, Illuminate Education is meeting its pledge to open standards in light of the critical needs of schools and districts to standardize the usability of digital teaching and learning tools across the curriculum.

"By becoming IMS Global certified, Illuminate continues to demonstrate a sincere commitment to interoperability standards," said Jason Naile, director of instructional technology and media at Forsyth County Schools in Georgia. "Working with partners who commit to IMS Global specifications lessens the burden on school districts and educators, reduces costs and implementation times, minimizes risk when procuring new products, and thus provides great value at the classroom level."

SchoolCity's OpenSalt v1, Popcorn v0.1, and Suites v4.1, 5.0 and 6+ have all earned IMS certification status. These products assist educators with content creation, assessment, student achievement and more.

Illuminate Education's SchoolCity products have earned IMS conformance certification to the latest versions of the following IMS Global standards:

Competencies and Academic Standards Exchange® (CASE) A framework for digitally transmitting learning standards, competencies, rubrics and the relationships among sets of learning standards.

OneRoster® Allows for the secure use of roster info by teaching and learning systems.

Question and Test Interoperability® (QTI) Enables the exchange of item and test content and results data between authoring tools, item banks, test construction tools, learning platforms, assessment delivery systems and scoring/analytics engines.

Learning Tools Interoperability® (LTI) Establishes a standard and secure way of integrating rich learning applications with platforms like learning management systems, portals or other educational environments.

"Illuminate's support for IMS standards is helping to build the most advanced ecosystem of innovative plug-and-play, data-rich educational technology products available and based on open standards," said Mark Leuba, vice president of product management, IMS Global Learning Consortium.

Illuminate Education acquired SchoolCity in July 2018, and has since incorporated the company into its roster of learning solutions. This certification contributes to the mission of providing educators everywhere with an efficient, streamlined teaching and learning experience.

"The IMS Global Learning Consortium is critical to the interoperability needs of all educational institutions, and Illuminate supports their mission to the fullest," said Christine Willig, CEO of Illuminate Education. "Achieving this certification demonstrates the commitment that we have to providing best-in-class products to educators everywhere and our role within the larger education ecosystem."

Aeries Software adopts Ed-Fi Standard

Aeries Software, the leading provider of student data management systems in California with over 530 public school districts utilizing the Aeries® Student Information System (SIS), today announced at its annual fall User's Conference that it has committed to delivering interoperability to its customers by adopting the Ed-Fi Data Standard, which is a way for multiple sources of data to seamlessly and securely connect. Aeries Software is currently pursuing Ed-Fi Certification, which will ensure the technology platforms are mapped correctly and will work as intended. Aeries Software will be offering this additional functionality to its school districts at no cost.

"By adopting the Ed-Fi Data Standard into our SIS, we are signaling our commitment to open standards, security and our customers, including the important populations they serve. Through this offering and our partnership with the Ed-Fi Alliance, we can help California districts maximize school resources when connecting data structures, ultimately providing secure analysis with clarity," said Brent Lloyd, Vice President of Aeries Software. "We are very proud to offer this robust integration platform to all Aeries Software customers."

Currently, school districts must write custom integrations each time they want to utilize a new software or technology tool. Even when they can successfully integrate a new software platform into their IT architecture, the data generated is siloed in its own system. This can waste valuable time for teachers and administrators that must log into multiple systems, making a complete picture of student progress near impossible.

There is a better, more efficient way to support educators and students. By standardizing on the Ed-Fi platform, technology providers, like Aeries Software and the school districts they serve, will have the benefits of dynamic data integration and ultimately the ability to surface real-time or near-real-time information to educators, administrators, parents and students in order to deliver the correct educational supports when it's needed most.

Further, by adopting Ed-Fi's Technology Suite, Aeries Software can strengthen California schools' ability to select "best-of-breed" tools, enhancing Aeries SIS student data with the district's choice of assessment and achievement data.

Aeries Software will be offering California schools a dynamic data integration with their Aeries Student Information System (SIS) and a wide variety of teaching and learning systems. Schools adopting the Ed-Fi Data Standard will provide educators greater access to many software resources with seamless data exchange with the Aeries SIS. Learning Management Systems (LMS), Assessment Testing, and Individualized Education Programs (IEP) will integrate with ease to the Aeries SIS using the Ed-Fi Data Standard.

Five-Way Merger Creates New Illuminate Education

lluminate Education, IO Education, SchoolCity, Alpine Achievement, and Key Data Systems merge to create the largest provider of data platforms, data, analytics, formative assessments, and a "whole view of the student."

Irvine, Lake Elsinore, and Santa Clara, CA., Atlanta, GA., and Centennial, CO. (July 03, 2018) Illuminate Education, the company transforming K-12 instruction through education intelligence solutions, has merged with IO Education, SchoolCity, Alpine Achievement, and Key Data Systems (KDS). The new company, called Illuminate Education, will be led by Christine Willig, a 25-year K-12 industry veteran. Insight Venture Partners, a New York-based venture capital and private equity firm focused on software investing and majority owner of Illuminate and KDS, facilitated the combination.

The merger combines leading formative assessment and data platforms (Illuminate Education, IO Education, SchoolCity and Alpine Achievement) with a leading formative item bank provider (Key Data Systems).

"We're going to deliver what educators and teachers ask for and students need – truly adaptive assessments, data and analytics that inform instruction, and linkages to curriculum and third-party resources in a single interoperable environment wherein choice and opportunity become nearly unlimited. The combined companies' expansive capabilities will save teachers time, serve each student's unique needs, and drive student achievement. Teachers and students will get what they need most – more time on the right task," said Christine Willig, CEO, Illuminate Education.

"This combination eliminates many barriers that were holding back the solution that educators tell us they want – 'all the data' on a 'single pane of glass'– providing a holistic view of the child that efficiently and effectively informs instruction. With nearly 15 million students and almost 300K formative assessment items on our combined platform, the opportunity to personalize learning is groundbreaking," said Adam Berger, Managing Director at Insight Venture Partners and Chairman of the new Illuminate Education.

By bringing together the best of what each formerly independent company offered into an open and interoperable environment, the newly formed Illuminate Education will support teachers, inform instruction, engage parents, and enhance individualized student achievement.

"We're thrilled to join the Illuminate Education family because of our shared mission to promote educator and student success," said Michael Williamson, Chief Executive Officer of IO Education.

"We recognize the growing importance of providing insights that empower educators to personalize the support they provide to each student," said Alisabeth Shearn, Chief Executive Officer of Alpine Achievement.

"We have long admired how Illuminate, IO, Alpine, and KDS have brought innovative solutions to the K-12 ecosystem. Merging in SchoolCity's ability to provide customized solutions will give educators the broadest set of choices," said Vaseem Anjum, Chief Executive Officer of SchoolCity.

Current customers of all five companies should expect minimal disruption as the merger occurs. "As we bring together the best aspects of each company's solutions to support educators and promote student success, we will put customers' needs at the forefront. It will be business as usual," said Willig.

With complete respect for privacy, a commitment to interoperability, and a singular focus on learning, Illuminate Education serves the art of teaching for positive student outcomes and ultimate success. By enabling teachers to teach to each student rather than teaching to the middle or to the test, both teachers and students win.

A WAN, a LAN, a MAN, a CAN, Panama?

We can classify a computer network into different types depending on its size and the geographical area it covers. The most common types of computer networks are LAN, MAN, WAN, PAN, etc.

What is a Local Area Network (LAN)?

LAN is a form of a computer network most known to the general public. It has a limited reach, roughly a bunch of closely situated houses or building. And that's because we typically use the Ethernet technology (IEEE 802.3) to power our local area networks. The ethernet cables we lay across our houses and offices have their practical limitations. Beyond a certain length, the speed gets degraded. The reach of a LAN can be enhanced using repeaters, bridges, etc.

Home Area Network (HAN)

A kind of local area network is the HAN (Home Area Network). All the devices like smartphones, computers, IoT devices, televisions, gaming consoles, etc. connect to a central router (wired or wireless) placed in a home constitute a home area network.

What is a Wireless LAN (WLAN)?

This type of computer network is a wireless counterpart of the local area network. It uses the WiFi technology defined as per the IEEE 802.11 standards. If you're the one who thinks WiFi and WLAN are the same things, then you need to rectify your confusion. They are completely different. WiFi is used to create a wireless local area network.

WiFi networks can reach up to a few hundred meters in a clear line of sight. However, just like wired LAN, its range can be increased using wireless repeaters and bridges.

What is a Personal Area Network (PAN)?

As the name suggests, a personal area network is intended for personal use within a range of a few ten meters. Mainly, the technologies used for creating personal area networks are wireless. A notable example of WPAN is the Bluetooth technology, mostly found on portable devices like smartphones, laptops, tablets, wearables, etc. Other PAN technologies are Zigbee, Wireless USB, etc.

What is a Campus Area Network (CAN)?

A network infrastructure covering the school, university, or a corporate premises can be dubbed as campus area network. It can comprise of several LANs, a central firewall, and connected to the internet using a leased line or any other means.

What is a Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)?

The area covered by a MAN is quite larger in comparison to a LAN and CAN. In fact, a MAN can be used to link several LANs spread across a city or a metro area. A wired backhaul spread across a city is used to powers a metropolitan area network in that place. You might have known about various city-wide WiFi networks in different parts of the world.

What is a Wide Area Network (WAN)?

We can think of a WAN as the superset of all the small networks we find in our homes, offices, cities, states, and countries. The router or modem placed at your home is a device used to connect to the WAN. The internet is also a type WAN that spans across the entire earth.

Various technologies like ADSL, 4G LTE, Fiber optic, cable, etc. are used to connect to the internet. However, these technologies mostly confine to a country at max. Cables are laid across countries and continents to establish global connectivity.

What is a Storage Area Network (SAN)?

Generally, it is used to connect external storage devices to servers but make them believe that the storage is attached directly. The technology used to accomplish this is known as Fiber Channel.

BrightBytes Acquires Trusted IPaaS Provider Authentica Solutions

BrightBytes adds Authentica to brand portfolio, providing educators with end-to-end data management to improve the way the world learns

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. — June 29, 2017 — BrightBytes,® a learning analytics organization currently impacting one in five schools in the United States, today announced the acquisition of Authentica Solutions, developer of DataSense, an education data Integration Platform as a Service (IPaaS). Authentica, a 2017 Microsoft Education Partner of the Year Finalist, currently partners with top enterprise solutions in edtech to help educators at every organizational level meet data management requirements. It is this deep experience in data integration within the K-12 space and the shared dedication to use data to drive learning that makes the combination of BrightBytes and Authentica an unstoppable force.

As big data informs more and more learning decisions, this groundbreaking acquisition marks a major milestone for the industry. Bringing the two companies together will provide educators with fast, easy, and secure data integration, research-based analysis, and actionable recommendations. Big data has caused an undeniable shift across every industry, but many educators have struggled to participate in the data revolution due to widespread data disarray or extreme DRIP (data rich, information poor) conditions. Collection methods, variables, and captured information differ greatly within data sets and produce disparate results for limited analysis. Authentica's IPaaS solution, DataSense, solves many of these integration challenges by providing a single, unified approach to managing all data integration, transformation, and migration processes between all of an education organizations' critical applications, including SIS to APP, APP to APP, and APP to EDW. The solution quickly streamlines quality data flow and removes laborious data collection, rostering, and scrubbing on the user's end.

The widespread availability of accurate and usable data has the potential to unlock a universe of information for educators. However, without the most insightful lens to understand data, the right research to provide meaning, and the clearest methods to communicate results, data is simply a scatter of numbers. The BrightBytes Clarity® platform, the world's leading decision support platform for K-12 educators, provides research-based analysis and organizes and delivers data across engaging, easy-to-understand dashboards and reports. To date, BrightBytes has impacted 9.2 million students by helping schools use data analysis to address common education challenges. Across the platform's core modules, educators can easily gain access to actionable data to evaluate technology efficacy, improve graduation rates, ensure organization-wide data privacy and security, and develop effective leaders. Clarity connects each organization's data to relevant research proven to drive outcomes.

"Educators have always had a lot of data, the challenge is integrating data from multiple sources, analyzing that data against research, communicating the results in an engaging and educative way, and understanding what specific levers need to be pulled to drive effective change. Bringing these two companies together will, for the first time, give educators an end-to-end solution for data-driven decision making," said BrightBytes' Chief Executive Officer, Traci Burgess.

Video surveillance systems are a great tool for ensuring student and driver safety on school buses. But having cameras installed on your buses without a well-defined video surveillance policy is a recipe for disaster, leaving your school district open to potential lawsuits or privacy complaints.

Here are three reasons why you need to publish a video surveillance policy today:

# 1 – The policy ensures the balance between security and an individual's right to privacy.

Putting this document in place is one of the best ways to protect the reputation of the transportation department in cases of complaints from parents or drivers concerned about privacy.

# 2 – The policy helps to assign responsibility for video surveillance system and files.

The policy allows assigning tasks between different groups of personnel.

# 3 – The policy ensures proper storage and distribution of recorded files.

Creating guidelines for storing and managing video will save your transportation department a lot of time. It will also help to keep the recordings safe and secure, and at the same time find the requested information faster.

Seon and US Computing Launch All-in-one Solution for School Transportation - vMax Compass

vMax Compass is a web-based solution that enables school transporters to plan and analyze routes, and then view students and vehicles, and access video surveillance health status in a single application.

June 20, 2013, Coquitlam, BC - Seon Design Inc. and US Computing Inc. are pleased to announce the launch of a revolutionary new all-in-one solution for school transportation. This 100% web-based application, vMax Compass, gives school transportation staff browser-based access to plan & analyze routes, track vehicles & students, and view live status of on-board video equipment all in real-time.

"We are very pleased to partner with U.S. Computing to deliver something truly innovative for school transportation," adds Terry Akiyama, President of Seon Design Inc. "School transporters will now be able to make more informed decisions about their fleet operations, and ensure driver and student safety with real-time information from vMax Compass."

Completely integrated web-based routing and tracking

vMax Compass is a truly web-based routing and tracking solution, unlike many others on the market that only offer limited, or delayed web access. To view real-time vehicle status or perform planned vs. actual route analysis there is no need to go through a complex, and time consuming process to import GPS data. With vMax Compass, vehicle location, student location, and even DVR health status information is automatically integrated so school transportation staff can evaluate fleet efficiency in real-time.

"We are excited about introducing a combined solution for web-based routing and tracking to the school transportation market," says Peter Simmons, Director of Marketing at Seon."With this integration school bus operators will now finally be able to access a single application to plan routes, tracking vehicles & students, and get video system health status."

Improved response times in case of emergency

Having real-time vehicle and student location information at your fingertips, integrated with your routing software,is ideal in emergency situations. Shaving precious minutes off emergency response times can make a big difference in getting situations under control.

"We wanted a solution that would give us the best vision of our fleet and the quickest response times when a school bus was involved in an accident or security incident," says John Bagert, Director of Transportation at Tyler lSD. "Live GPS [and student tracking] provides exactly that for us,plus other unexpected efficiencies."

Kerry Somerville, Director of Business Development for U.S. Computing sums up the partnership between Seon and U.S.Computing saying,"Seon is a company with proven technology that we are extremely pleased to partner with. We've taken the best of Seon's tracking and video hardware and integrated it with U.S.Computing's innovative, webbased routing platform to create a winning combination for school transportation staff."

For the last twelve month (LTM) period ending December 31, 2016, more than 2.8 million new learners registered with Parchment services.

For the LTM period, Parchment facilitated the exchange of more than 8.6 million credential transactions, a 21 percent increase over the prior year LTM.

"The vision Parchment members share to innovate the form and function of the credentials they issue represents a tremendous opportunity and responsibility, " said Matthew Pittinsky, Ph.D., Parchment Chief Executive Officer.
